10 Fore Street

No 10 Fore Street is a 16th century building that was partially rebuilt in 1644 after damage sustained during the civil war. Its first recorded landlord is William Netherton in 1785, running his beer house under the sign of the Jolly Sailor. It was referred to later as the Sailor’s Inn and then the Sailor’s Arms, and there is a suggestion that it may once have been called the Admiralty Arms. It is not known why the nautical theme was so strong. It was a well-established part of the town and was the venue for the Lostwithiel feast day in 1806. The pub is recorded as owned by Richard Wright in 1825 and by John Moody in 1830, but it was owned by Walter Phillips of Lanlivery from the 1840s until the early 1870s. Richard Chegwiden of Cubert owned it from 1877 to its closure in 1883. Its existence as a pub can be imagined from the hanging sign (not original) and from the central doorway with its sloping floor to ease the movement of beer barrels.

After the death of Richard Chegwidden, it was bought by Lord Robartes, who kept it for the residence of Mr Chegwidden’s widow until her death. It was acquired by Peter Ede in 1906 to be run as Ede’s Temperance House, and was latterly run by his son Percy and Percy’s wife Marion as a sweet shop.

The building was later bought be a builder, who also bought No 9, next door, and converted the whole site into two shops with a large flat above both. The ground floor of No 9 became an antiques shop, initially Paraphernalia and then Curiouser and Curiouser. It latterly became Foodie’s coffee shop, before the catastrophic collapse of a cob-built side wall forced its closure. Following the rebuilding of the side wall, the shop was taken over by the Property Shop.

No 10, the original Sailor’s Arms, became the Duchy Coffee Shop in the 1990s and was then, in 2021, opened by Shoji Devassia as a branch of his Sunny Spice venture. Specialising in South Indian cuisine, it has an extensive menu of specialities cooked from fresh ingredients on the premises.
