This area was once the town rubbish tip and could be quite a dangerous place. A quote from a Lostwithiel resident who played there as a young lad (he is now well over 90) makes this clear.
“When they dumped the rubbish, they set fire to it so it didn’t pile up too high. We was down there playing one afternoon and this boy called Dougie, he walked out when it was burning, it was all soft so he sank down, he burnt all his legs and was scarred for life. We was always told ‘stay on the road’. The fires kept smouldering underneath the surface for many weeks”.
