Memories of the market

Some local residents have fond memories of market day.

Gill Parsons wrote in the local newsletter:

‘I remember when growing up in Quay Street, on Market Days some of the cattle lorries would park on the Quay and the livestock would be driven on foot along the street, through Monmouth Lane (known as Tram Lane years ago) across North Street and into the Cattle Market. The town was buzzing with farmers and the Hotels and Pubs were usually full, serving meals all day; even Mrs Round who ran a grocery shop in Parade Square used her back room to serve delicious home- cooked dinners on Market Days.’

Alan Crago remembers that

‘When we came out of school at lunchtime, we would not worry about lunch, but go straight to the market. On the way there we would get a bucket from mother and go down to the cattle pens. The farmers would allow the school children to milk the cows and take the milk home. To be able to take about half a bucket of fresh milk home was a very big deal indeed!’
